Shangin Lighthouse Peak

Altai region
The peak (lighthouse) of Shangin is the highest point of the Altai Territory, one of the peaks of the Korgon Range (2490.3 m above sea level). But despite its outstanding height, until recently, the mountain did not have an official geographical name and was not indicated on maps.

The name of the mountain peak was given thanks to the regional newspaper Altayskaya Pravda, which in 2011 came up with a corresponding initiative, organized an expedition to an unnamed mountain and held a competition among readers for the best name. Of the many options, the most successful was the proposal to name the mountain peak in memory of the famous scientist of Altai, P.I.Shangin.

Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of February 15, 2014 (N 107, Moscow) "On assigning a name to a geographical object in the Altai Territory" reads: "Based on the proposal of the Altai Regional Legislative Assembly and in memory of the mining specialist, mineralogist P.I. Shangin , who made a significant contribution to the study and development of the Altai Territory, to assign the name "Mount Lighthouse Shangin" to the nameless mountain of the Korgon Range, located in the Altai Territory, with coordinates 50 46.6 'north latitude, 84 32.1 east longitude and an absolute height of 2490, 3 meters".
