Monument to A.S. Pushkin

Barnaul, a public garden at the intersection of Pushkin Street and Lenin Avenue

The idea of a monument to the great compatriot in Barnaul "infected" the local creative circles back in 1993 by the poet Sergei Soroka. The city allocated a place on Pushkin Street, and creative intelligentsia and entrepreneurs paid for the creation and casting of the monument. A year before the 200th anniversary of the poet's birth, a stone appeared in the park with the inscription "A monument to Pushkin will be erected here." And in 1999, a bronze monument was erected in its place. Of the two versions of the poet's appearance, sculpted by sculptor Mikhail Kulgachev - radiant and dramatic - the council of patrons preferred a more complex image.

The whole monument would have to be ordered in Moscow, but the initiative group was in a hurry to be in time for the anniversary, so the sculpture was cast in parts at the Barnaul plant "Transmash". To thoroughly process the surface of the monument, local craftsmen built a flamethrower. To replace the technology of manual embossing of brass parts (which would have taken months), a pneumatic hammer was borrowed from the Altai aviation enterprise. The fencing with balusters was made at the experimental enterprise AltGTU, local builders helped with the formwork and foundation.

On the pedestal of the monument, which the people of Barnaul erected "by the whole world", the inscription "To the singer of love - love is a reward" is made. Every year on June 6, on the poet's birthday, the Pushkin Readings are held in the park near the monument. In the year of the opening of the monument, the city administration established the Pushkin Prize for young poets.
