The snow-white seven-meter letters "Barnaul" on the slope of the Nagorny Park are clearly visible at the entrance to the city from the New Bridge. They appeared over a gentle slope to the Ob at the end of 1997 at the initiative of the mayor Vladimir Bavarin. The construction was designed by the architect Viktor Chetoshnikov, almost 20 meters long. Each letter consists of several parts, reinforced with a metal frame, and firmly mounted in the concrete platform.

The inscription, reminiscent of the letters on the Hollywood Hills, has become the hallmark of the capital of the region. In the dark, it is illuminated by lanterns and is clearly visible at a distance of several kilometers. Every spring, the letters are cleaned and painted during the city cleanup.
