House of S.Ya. Yakovleva

Barnaul, st. M. Gorky, 30 / Korolenko, 50

The best merchant building in Barnaul is called a corner mansion in the Art Nouveau style with elements of Baroque and Classicism at the intersection of Korolenko and Gorky streets.

The architectural design of the building has not survived, presumably the author could be I.F. Nosovich. The beginning of construction is most often dated back to 1911. The customer was the S.Ya. Yakovlev and A.I.Polyakov trade partnership. But during the construction process, Yakovlev's property was described for debts - at that time only walls and a roof had been erected near the "dream house". The mansion was completed by the owner of the first Barnaul "skyscraper" Nikolai Averin.

Despite the great damage from the fire of 1917, the external appearance of the building has survived to this day unchanged. In the late 1990s, the Yakovlev-Polyakov house was carefully restored as an architectural monument of federal significance. An intricate roof, a corner tower with baroque decor crowned with a spire, arched and round windows, bay windows, chains supporting the canopy give the two-storey building with a semi-basement a unique look. In the decor of the facades, light plastered surfaces contrast with elements of bright brickwork.

This luxurious mansion was used by a very motley audience - before the revolution, shopping areas and offices of the city council were located here. After the Bolshevik coup, the building housed a military unit, a labor exchange, a hostel, a medical outpatient clinic and a citywide insurance fund. Since 1932 - the General Staff of the NKVD, since 1953 - the State Bank, then the Central Bank and the banking school.
