Museum of the History of the Altai Spiritual Mission

Altai Territory, Biysk, st. Irkutsk, 1/20.

The Museum of the History of the Altai Spiritual Mission is located in the building of the Bishops' House (in the residence of the former head of the Altai Spiritual Mission), built in 1888. On the third floor of the building there was a single-altar house church of St. Demetrius of Rostov. The building was built at the expense of Biysk benefactors.

In the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries, Biysk was the center of the Altai spiritual mission. In the heyday, the center of the mission, the Biysk bishop's courtyard, was an impressive set of buildings, parks and reservoirs. Many buildings have survived to this day.

The Museum of the History of the Altai Spiritual Mission was founded on January 28, 2008. The museum has about 54 thousand exhibits. The most ancient is one of the first printed books of Russia - "Oktoikh" published in Moscow in 1618. Among the unique collections of the museum are collections of Orthodox icons, copper Orthodox casting, old-printed Orthodox books, pectoral crosses and much more.
