Assumption Cathedral

Biysk, st. Soviet, 13

The Assumption Cathedral is the pearl of the historical part of the city of Biysk, which adorns it not only with its magnificent architecture, but also with its excellent interior decoration.

The temple was founded in 1898 and solemnly consecrated in 1903. It was built in the traditional Russian-Byzantine style and is one of the main attractions of the city. It was built with donations from the townspeople. The guardian of the temple and the main donor for its construction was the honorary citizen of the city Mikhail Savelievich Sychev.

At the temple in 1908 there was a parish school for men, a parish school. Since 1918 the temple has been renamed as a cathedral. In the 20s of the twentieth century, the cathedral began to be a cathedral.

In connection with the massive persecution in the 1920s and 1930s. to the Russian Orthodox Church, the cathedral was closed in 1932 and adapted for a granary. Many clergy and clergymen were repressed. Services resumed in 1947. In the post-war Soviet years, the Assumption Church became the only one functioning for many hundreds of kilometers for numerous believers in the southeastern part of the Altai Territory. In 1950-70s, due to the strengthening of atheistic propaganda in the country, there was a threat of its secondary closure and even demolition. In the late eighties and early nineties, history changed the fate of the country and the fate of the temple.
