Altai Kray

Altai Kray is situated in South-East of Western Siberia, in 3419 km from Moscow. The territory of the region is 168 thousands square kilometers. Altai is very big and various. Steppes and lowland change into foothills and mountains.
Four seasons have numerous sides and from year to year turn to tourists with different edges. Summer itself  has different times: cold, heat, dryness, showeriness.
Winters in Altai are long, beautiful, snowy. Russian winter fairy-tales reproduce the atmosphere, plots, characters of people very well. As if all of them were written here, in Altai. Strong winter presents warm decades, when walks skiing, sledging, skating make winter rest unforgettable.
In the centre of Eurasian continent, in the middle of a great Asian steppe, where in prehistoric times located the sea, nowadays there are unique pine band type forests. One can see them only in Altai Kray and there are no analogues in the world. Long lacustrine chains strech along green bands.
The river Ob' is one of the greatest water arteries in Eurasia and the world. It forms with the junction of two rivers Biya and Katun'. The southern part is occupied by mountain ridges of Altai-Sainskaya system, comparatively low (to 2490 meters), but incredibly picturesque and various.
Slopes covered with forests, atternate with alpine tundra belt. Mountain rivers boil up in canyons, caves save the secrets of ancient people life. There are hundreds of fresh, salt, salt-bitter lakes.

-Altai attracts tourists by the pecularities of nature. Nowhere in Siberia one can find such beautiful mountain chains with snow and ice, Alpine meadows, rocky canyons, impetuous rivers with rapids and waterfalls, small and big lakes, dark coniferous forests in the East and light deciduous forests in the West.

 
Beauty And Strength Of Natural Richness

The main curative factor of Belokurikha resort is radon water, which belongs to the group of nitrogen and silicium thermal waters with a high level of fluorine and microelements. Radon water relieves pain and inflammation, increases the immune system and calms nerves. 15 health resort centers operate in Belokurikha.

Altai is also famous for the treatment using antlers of Siberian stags. They have been used in oriental medicine for thousands of years for the production of different medical mixtures which have a strong recovering effect. By the way, Altai stag is an endemic, and the curative properties of its antlers are passed on the genetic level. Today over 30 Siberian stag breeding farms operate in the region.

Health-giving flora numbers more than 1184 kinds of plants, the group of curative herbs is the largest, 100 kinds of them are widely used in official medicine. They are golden root, peony, the Ural's licorice, origanum,       St- John's wort, elecampane and other. There are medicinal plants, cultivation of wich is difficult and natural deposits are the only source of raw material: spring adonis, red bilderries, sweet flag, yellow water-lilly.

Decoctions and tea from herbs, berry fruit drinks- everyone who visits Altai should taste it. One can feel wonderful cosmetic and medicinal effect in the health-centers. Wild herbs are tamed here by knowledge and experience of people.

 
Settlement Of Altai
Young Russia needed metal for the production of weapon and coins in the 18th century. The first metallurgical factory - Kolyvano Voskresenskiy factory, was founded by Akinfiy Demidov in 1729. The bowels of Altai were also rich with silver. The clercks of Demidov started silver-refining production in 1744. The result of activity of Akinfiy Demidov became the creation of feudal mining industry based on bonded labour of peasants and masters.
